Denzel and Travolta Take Manhattan

John Travolta can be amazing (Pulp Fiction) or totally embarrassing (Battlefield Earth). But teamed up with Denzel Washington, who can read the phone book and be captivating, Travolta elevates his game.
The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, a remake of a 1974 cult classic, has a mediocre plot and would have been pretty lame with any two other actors in the lead roles. But Denzel and Travolta’s performances — and a few hyped-up, amped-up car crashes — make this movie, directed by action God Tony Scott, a must-see.
GREEK TRAGEDY

Is Nia Vardalos the new Barbra Streisand? At least three times in My Life in Ruins, the characters around her tell her she’s pretty or skinny. Her obvious low self-esteem sinks this unromantic uncomedy, about a bitchy American who’s a travel guide in Greece.
Nia, once the pleasingly plump star of the delightful 2002 smash hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding, plays Giorgia, a bitter (obviously hungry) singleton who is looking for her Kefi, which means she needs to get her Grecian groove back. She hates her job, because she’s a snooty scholar who wants to teach the tourists about the ancient ruins, but all they want to do is buy cheap tchotchkes and eat ice cream.

After the earsplitting cacophony of Terminator Salvation and the bulging veins of Wolverine, Disney Pixar’s Up is a summer breeze, a welcome breath of fresh air. In this clever and touching animated pic, our heroes are a curmudgeonly 78-year-old balloon salesman and a chunky 8-year-old Asian kid. And it totally works. There hasn’t been an onscreen odd couple this charming since Midnight Cowboy. Okay, just kidding. But seriously, you’re going to love these two together.

Movie Review: Special Effects Only Thing Special in 'Terminator Salvation’

Christian Bale apologized for his infamous, profanity-laced tirade on the set of Terminator Salvation but you still can’t help but think he’s a pompous jerk while watching the movie. Considering that his dialogue consists mainly of cliche gems such as, “We’re all gonna die!” or “The devil’s hands have been busy,” it’s pretty shocking that he would have gone off on director of photography Shane Hurlbut for walking in his line of vision. “I’m trying to do a f***ing scene here!” Bale screamed. “My mind is not in the scene if you’re doing that! You’re trashing my scene!”
Bale doesn’t even have that many scenes. And in the ones he appears in, he not only overacts (in his breathy Batman voice), he’s personality-less. Bale is completely upstaged by deafening CGI effects and his co-stars, especially Sam Worthington, who plays sexy and mysterious human-machine hybrid Marcus Wright.

Angels & Demons is God-Awful

In the first scene that Tom Hanks appears onscreen as Robert Langdon, he’s wearing a Speedo-like bathing suit. It’s not the only inappropriate moment in Angels & Demons, which desecrates the Vatican with murder, mayhem and even a little sexual tension. Even if it’s just a movie and it’s a fake Vatican, it all seems a little disrespectful. [Full disclosure: the person writing this review grew up in a secular household so she’s not like a religious freak or anything. She just thinks that a movie about Popes being murdered in really gruesome ways is kind of icky.]
That’s not the only problem with Angels & Demons — the plot is preposterous. Langdon is called back to the Vatican after an ancient underground brotherhood called the Illuminati, who favor science over religion, steals a bomb made by a hot Italian scientist named Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer) from the European Council for Nuclear Research in Switzerland. After the Pope dies under mysterious circumstances, the Illuminati, who hate the Catholic Church for persecuting them hundreds of years ago, kidnap four candidates for Popehood during Conclave, then threaten to kill each one every hour and set off the bomb, which will destroy Vatican City.
Compliments to the Management

Say what you want about Jennifer Aniston’s disastrous real-life love life, she’s still one of the best comedic actresses around. And she’s also pretty easy on the eyes. Aniston’s “X-Factor” thing plus an outstanding performance by her co-star Steve Zahn make Management one of the most pleasant surprises of the summer movie season.
Jen plays Sue Claussen, a bored traveling corporate art saleswoman from Maryland, who ends up staying at roadside motel in Arizona owned and managed by Zahn’s goofy and lonely character, Mike Cranshaw, and his parents. As soon as Mike lays eyes on Sue’s rear-end, he’s lovestruck. He brings a old dusty bottle of wine to her room, compliments of The Management, and the two end up having a passionate yet awkward sexual encounter in the laundry room. When she leaves, she doesn’t expect to ever see Mike again. But she soon finds out that she can’t get rid of him.
Star Trek Movie Review
Posted on May 09, 2009 @ 10:32AM - Add a comment

When you hear Hollywood is “re-imagining” a classic television or movie franchise AGAIN expectations are usually low but J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” truly reaches a new frontier.
You don’t have to wait long for warp speed with an impressive opening sequence with James T. Kirk’s father commanding a federation starship under attack by the revenge-seeking Romulans led by an unrecognizable Eric Bana as Nero. After the intergalactic battle, the story flashes forward and we meet Spock and James T. Kirk as troubled youngsters and later as young adults embarking on their careers with Star Fleet.
Once in Star Fleet, Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) clash over protocols and chain of command. Their relationship comes to blows when Spock is put in command of the U.S.S. Enterprise after Captain Pike is taken hostage by the Romulans. Now in charge, Spock ejects Kirk from the U.S.S. Enterprise and strands him on a remote planet. Not such a nice Spock, right? But don’t worry, they work in the Spock (Leonard Nimoy) we know and love to balance out. Can’t tell you how without spoiling it.
“It’s the RealD”

What is RealD and why are all these stars wearing silly glasses? If you haven’t heard – or rather, seen – already, Hollywood loves 3D. “Monsters and Aliens,” “Caroline”, “Jonas Bros 3D Concert Experience”, “My Bloody Valentine 3D” are just a few of the new releases and you can expect plenty more. (Over the next three years, about 40 films are scheduled to appear utilizing 3D.)
