Mark Everett – a.k.a. E – has returned with his first album in four years that saw him release his autobiography and star in a documentary with his father. “The other projects have been great experiences for me, but this is what I love to do,” says E, who recorded the seventh Eels album in his Los Angeles studio. “I wanted to write a set of songs about desire—that dreadful, intense want that gets you into all sorts of situations that can change your life in big ways.”

Placebo: Battle For the Sun

For their sixth album, Placebo wanted something colorful and lustful – and less dark and bleak - so they enlisted producer Dave Bottrill (known for his work with Tool). “I wanted to do something a bit more upbeat and optimistic, almost psychedelic in the true sense of the word,” says frontman Brian Molko, who penned many of the songs on a boat shadowed by the Eiffel Tower. “Not necessarily inspired by psychedelic music, but full of color. Something that had a libidinous quality to it.”

Paolo Nutini

Though his name might seem a bit misleading, Paolo Nutini is actually from Scotland. The 22-year-old British singer-songwriter, who is often lumped with the likes of James Blunt and Damien Rice, offers up his second album of blue-eyed soul this week, rather optimistically titled Sunny Side Up.

“It’s a flat out positive message, what I’m singing about, it’s a good vibe,” explains Nutini. “I really wanted to project from the album a positivity about what’s happening about life. It’s pretty idealistic, but it kind of gets thrown in your face. There’s no room to be an idealist sometimes. But it’s a happy record.”

Apparently, people can’t get enough of Yoko as her dance single “I’m Not Getting Enough (The Remixes)” tops the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Chart which makes this her 3rd Consecutive Club Chart-Topper !

Originally lifted from Ono’s 2001 album, BLUEPRINT FOR A SUNRISE,  it spent 11 weeks on the Billboard Club Play Chart before nabbing the coveted #1 spot  beating out releases from contemporary pop, dance and rock music
heavyweights like THE KILLERS, RIHANNA, BRITNEY SPEARS and AKON.

"I like this a lot for very obvious reasons…it’s Dope! It might be song of the week, actually." Mark Ronson

Part Motown, part Hall & Oates, L.A. band Fritz &  The Tantrums are a modern throwback with “Breakin’ The Chains Of Love”, from their debut EP, “Songs For A Break Up: Volume 1.”

Mark Ronson declared them “dope!” and we couldn’t agree more.

Phoenix’s stunning fourth album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, out in the U.S. on May 26th, is the result of much toil. Music this beautiful doesn’t just spring from musicians’ heads. For the four Frenchmen in Phoenix, it began with finding the right place to record, which proved to be their first big obstacle. There were failed attempts to find inspiration on a boat on the Sienne with a view of the Eiffel Tower, at New York’s Bowery Hotel and another three weeks in a rented New York apartment.

The Biggest Band You’ve Never Heard Of

Hint: They’re from Australia and their single has had the longest chart run in Oz history.

Men At Work?

INXS?

Midnight Oil ?

Wrong all on three counts.

Sneaky Sound System is a huge hit down under with their single “I Love It” an irresistible little ditty that sticks like gum in your brain.

The Sydney trio of Miss Connie (Connie Mitchell), Black Angus (Angus McDonald), and MC Double D (Daimon Downey), will never be mistaken for a hard rock band with their dance club roots and sing-along 1980s electro-pop.

A Musical Stroll With The Walkmen

There’s a reason The Walkmen have been a college-radio staple for almost a decade. The band, which formed in 2000, has an atmospheric sound—and singer Hamilton Leithauser’s Van Morrison-esque vocals—to set them apart from the airwaves’ influx of indie rock.

The group still has a dedicated following of current and former college rockers. Their Wednesday night show at the El Rey in Los Angeles was proof. (I think the only place you’ll ever see as many plaid, button-up shirts is a lumberjack convention.) There’s something inherently nostalgic, but never outright retro, about their dedication to using vintage instruments like upright piano. And Leithauser, who sulks on stage, hands in pockets, has an unfussy presence that’s much more Lou Reed than Brandon Flowers. There were murmurs of recognition every time the group launched into another song, and when they played their driving, best-loved single, “The Rat,” they consumed the audience and the venue in an ocean of sound.

#3 Britney Spears: It’s been a long time since we saw a photo of Spears carrying her signature Frappuccino—and it shows. “A Frappucino is a liquid meal, not a beverage,” says Sass. The singer is currently on tour, which has also helped her reshape her body. “Dancing is a full-body workout,” says Sass, “and it gives you both cardio and strength training.” (Photos: Splash News)
