Chaz Bono and his long-time companion are being run out of their West Hollywood home.....not by their neighbors who support Cher's daughter's decision to transgender....but by rats.  Real rats!

It turns out that the house next door to Chaz's is under construction, and the trash on the site has caused a major rodent infestation.

"The rats are pretty bad in our street and leaving all that rubbish out around the construction hasn't helped the situation," one of Bono's neighbors told RadarOnline.com.

"Chastity and her partner are good neighbors who pretty much keep themselves private although they always say 'hello'. I feel sorry for them having to live directly next door to that house while the work is being done. On top of that it gets really noisy at times with all the workmen and a lot of the residents are frustrated about the construction which has been going on for the past six months," the neighbor explained.

To escape the problem, Chaz and his partner have been spending many of their nights at brother brother Elijah Blue Allman's nearby gated $2 million home.

The last time a Bono was on the red carpet at Outfest, the country's largest festival of gay-lesbian-transgender themed films it was when Chastity Bono attended as a woman in 2005.  When the event kicks off again in Los Angeles on July 9, the organizers are hoping to see a male Chaz Bono make the scene, RadarOnline.com has learned exclusively.

"We have invited him to attend," Kristen Schaffer, Outfest Executive Director told RadarOnline.com

"I am excited for Chaz that he will now be able to live life the way he wants to and in a body that is more comfortable for him. Chaz's 'coming out' as transgender is wonderful for the LGBT community as it not only increases transgender visibility, but also shows that we should never compromise our own identity.

"Over the past decade, Outfest has seen more and more films made by and about the transgender community, and this year through the Outfest Legacy Project we are proud to restore QUEENS AT HEART which in 1965 was one of the first films to feature transgender subjects.

We hope that through Chaz's courageous journey more people become inspired and continue this important dialogue about diversity and equality."

Psychologist Explains Gender Re-Assignment

For the average person, changing one's gender through surgery seems extreme and inexplicable but an expert in the field explains that the procedure is simply a realization of that person's most natural state and leaning.

“In all my 33 years of doing gender assignment therapy, when I ask my patients how long they have wanted to change genders, almost 100 percent of them say, ‘as long as I can remember.’" Dr, Sherman Leis, a Philadelphia-based board certified plastic surgeon who has been doing gender reassignment surgery for 33 years, told RadarOnline.com.

“Studies have shown that there are certain changes in the hypothalamus part of the brain that indicate gender preference. In other words, if a child is born a female but the hypothalamus gland is shaped like that of a male, she will be genetically programmed to be a male," he explains.

"She can try to dress up like a woman, play with dolls as a child but the drive to be a male will always haunt her. It may take years-even decades for the person to realize his or her trans gender nature but they will be desperately unhappy and confused until they do."

There are many serious requirements one must meet before being cleared for the procedure- and not all of them are physical. "I will not perform gender re-assignment surgery until my therapist determines whether or not the patient is emotional stable and not psychotic and is willing to accept the changes that will take place," Leis added. "They need to be able to handle the transition and be fully aware of the consequences. They need to fully understand that their gender was like a birth defect and they can goon with their lives in this case, successfully as a male."

The process also extends past the operating table: “It usually takes a year of therapy, hormone replacement therapy and presenting as a male before I perform the actual surgery. Presenting means that they have to act like a male, dress like a male, change their name to a more masculine one and show that they can life the life of a male before we proceed.”

Inside Chastity Bono’s Lifetime Struggle

Chaz Bono may soon become the brave new face of the transgendered world but he started out as Chastity Bono- the sparkling tot who hung around the set of her very famous parents’ very famous TV show. Over the years, Bono has opened up about her personal struggle to come to terms with her sexuality. RadarOnline.com brings you an in-depth look at her often very public ups and downs.

Despite the glitz and glam life of her mother Cher, Bono found herself drawn to other things and was a self-proclaimed tomboy. "She would have liked a little girl who would have liked to play dress-up in her closet. I was not one of them.” she admitted.

While in her freshman year at NYU in 1989, she came out to her parents with mixed results. Father Sonny (who she told first) was extremely supportive and loving while her mother Cher went “ballistic for a couple of days” before coming around.

As a struggling reporter in her early 20s, Bono continued to keep her orientation secret from anyone outside of her close family and friend. She denied all media reports about her sexuality since she wasn’t comfortable with the world-wide attention. "It retarded my coming-out process. It pretty much ground it to a halt for a few years," she recalled.

In April 1995, she declared she was a lesbian on the cover of The Advocate, thus completing the “last step” of her coming out. A year before, her partner of two years Joan passed away after a battle with lymphoma.

Upset that her dad (now a California Congressman) voted in July 1996 for the Republican-sponsored Defense of Marriage Act, which denies federal recognition of same-sex marriages. "It wasn't like I didn't love him or we had a falling out," she said shortly after his tragic death on the ski slopes. "We just hadn't talked in a while. I just wish--more than anything--that I could wake up in the morning, find him in the kitchen and have a cup of coffee with him."

Now, she tries to make sure politics doesn’t divide and enjoys the support of her stepmother Mary, who took over Sonny Bono's House seat after his death and who sits on the House Judicial Committee. “The Congresswoman loves and supports Chaz and is hopeful that his privacy and very personal decisions will be respected during this time,” Congressman Bono told RadarOnline.com in a statement on Thursday.
